facebook competition for user engagement
With rugby in South Africa being more of an obsession than a sport and the Springboks being one of the top ranked sides in the world it made sense to engage with rugby fans on a social media level to leverage the unqiue interactive opportunities it affords.
As a result, Techsys created the Shield Bok Wake-Up Call Facebook application. Due to the 2011 Rugby World Cup being hosted in New Zealand, this created a 12 hour time-zone difference which resulted in many of the Bok games being played in what would be South Africa's morning hours. The social media application featured iconic Bok players to phone fans with a wake-up reminder to tune into the big game.
The fans would submit their number via the Springbok team Facebook page and 48 hours before the Boks took to the field, they would receive a reminder call from one of the Boks, and another "wake-up" call 1 hour before match time. Fans could also invite 5 of their friends to notify them about the application so they too would have an opportunity to hear from one of their Bok hero's and make it to the game on time.
This app proved to be a huge hit with the Bok fans, it created quite a bit of social hype and conversation with thousands of likes and hundreds of comments during the campaigns month-long period. As a result won a much coveted Creative Circle Award and most importantly, created fantastic engagement with our client's brand.
